چکیده

In 14 normal subjects and in 13 patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases, we studied the variability within an individual of values for the maximal expiratory flow rate (‘Vmnx) recorded simultaneously vs expired pulmonary volume (at the mouth) and vs thoracic volume (measured with a body plethysmograph). We found that the variance of lmax within an individual at 25, 50, and 75 percent of the expired vital capacity did not differ statistically whether pulmonary volume was the expired or the thoracic gas volume. In ten healthy subjects on two occasions (at an interval of 12 days, on the average), we measured the peak expiratory flow rate and

Mechanical correlates of dyspnea in bronchial asthma

We hypothesized that dyspnea and its descriptors, that is, chest tightness, inspiratory effort, unrewarded inspiration, and expiratory difficulty in asthma reflect different mechanisms of airflow obstruction and their perception varies with the severity of bronchoconstriction. Eighty-three asthmatics were studied before and after inhalation of methacholine doses decreasing the 1-sec forced expi...

Regression equations for spirometry in children aged 6 to 17 years in Delhi region.

BACKGROUND Most of the studies carried out in India to develop regression equations for spirometry in children are now several years-to-decades old and had used equipment and measurement protocols that have since changed. Prediction equations using the current standardisation protocols for spirometry are not available. The lung health of the population may have changed too. OBJECTIVE To devel...

Lost in Translation: Piloting a Novel Framework to Assess the Challenges in Translating Scientific Uncertainty From Empirical Findings to WHO Policy Statements

Background Calls for evidence-informed public health policy, with implicit promises of greater program effectiveness, have intensified recently. The methods to produce such policies are not self-evident, requiring a conciliation of values and norms between policy-makers and evidence producers. In particular, the translation of uncertainty from empirical research findings, particularly issues of...

Cardiac Autonomic Adjustments During Baroreflex Test in Obese and Non-Obese Preadolescents

BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown changes in cardiac autonomic control of obese preadolescents. OBJECTIVE To assess the heart rate responses and cardiac autonomic modulation of obese preadolescents during constant expiratory effort. METHODS This study assessed 10 obese and 10 non-obese preadolescents aged 9 to 12 years. The body mass index of the obese group was between the 95th and 97th...

Variability in the interpolated twitch torque for maximal and submaximal voluntary contractions.

The superimposed twitch technique is frequently used to study the degree of motor unit activation during voluntary effort. This technique is one of the preferred methods to determine the activation deficit (AD) in normal, athletic, and patient populations. One of the limitations of the superimposed twitch technique is its variability under given contractile conditions. The objective of this res...
